Weight management is the process of adjusting or altering your overall physical make up by changing its overall weight by either fat loss or muscular gain. For those trying to gain an athletic type physique this will mean addressing both factors. For many in the Western World at the moment, this is probably just about losing body fat as we are, as a society, the most obese we have been in human history. Ideally, we should try to lose weight by a combination of diet and exercise. It's generally considered that the proportion of diet to exercise to achieve ideal weight management success is 80% diet and 20% exercise. This will be different for all individuals according to your ability to exercise, access to a full range of healthy foods and willingness, or ability, to abide by a diet and exercise regime. There are any number of fad diets out there that you may have already tried. The 5-2 Diet, Keto, WW Points, Cabbage Soup Diet, Fruitarianism, or even the water diet. There's too many to list. The problem with fad diets is that they may work in the short term, but they are generally unsustainable. You just end up putting the weight back on, or worse, end up being more overweight. | ![]() |
As a PT I work within a Scope of Practice than means I can provide advice and recommendations according to The Australian Dietary Guidelines and The Australian Guidelines to Healthy Eating. Within these guidelines it's quite easy to analyse a person's diet and caloric intake and make recommendations on how to add or subtract certain foods to achieve a net caloric loss which will result it fat loss. Another excellent source of information and dietary program is the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet. By analysing and then comparing what you're consuming to these guidelines and plans we can come up with a eating program for you. The beauty of doing this is that there are almost unlimited ways in which to adjust what you're eating and doing more of less to achieve the results you're after. | The one key point though, that I must stress, is that to lose body fat it normally means a change of lifestyle to some degree. Losing weight is an holistic endeavour and psychology plays a massive part in choosing to go on a weight loss journey and then sticking to the plan, for life. For some people this may mean a tweak here and a tweak there, but for others, it maybe a huge commitment and undertaking. The first step on your journey is to identify that you need or want to change and making the psychological commitment to start it and stick to it over time. There's no quick fix. |
